Chavs blaimed for spam increase

Chavs in their bling bling jewellery and designer labels have caused an increase in spam emails offering luxury brands, it is claimed.

For anyone outside the UK not familiar with the term chav heres a primer.

According to Lycos, the rise of chav culture has led to an increase in spam email offering imitation designer watches and clothes.   Lycos’s spam filters blocked 133 million unsolicited mails containing references to luxury brands in the past year, four times as much than 2003.

Of the 133 million chav spams, over 13 million were dedicated to offers of imitation Rolex watches. Other chav-related spam, says Lycos, included offers for cheap Gucci and Chanel goods.

Wessel van Rensburg, email product manager for Lycos, said: “Luxury brand spam has increased dramatically in recent months.  For email users who want to avoid the latest phenomenon, we would recommend seeking an email package that has spam filtering software to combat the problem."

The top five brands popular with chavs filtered in Lycos’s spam software are:

1 Rolex
2 Gucci
3 Chanel
4 Dior
5 Vuitton
