Spam hotspots are emerging as the global levels of junk mail worldwide continue to increase. More than two thirds (67.6 per cent) of the 840m emails scanned by filtering firm MessageLabs last month was identified as spam.

As the quantity of illegitimate e-mails continues to rise, more companies have been employing mail-filtering products at the edge of their network. The filtering products generally contain a relatively small amount of storage to hold quarantined e-mails-messages that are most likely spam, but may not be.

Singapore to make spammers pay - literally

Singapore yesterday floated plans to fine spammers a small amount for each item of junk mail they send. Officials in the tightly controlled city state reckon fine of between ten cents and one Singapore Dollar ($0.06 to $0.58) for each spam email would deter marketing transgressions. ISPs would be able to sue bulk mailers if they flouted the country’s forthcoming anti-spam laws.

Never afraid to dip into its monster cash pile when an opportunity presents itself, Symantec is going to buy Brightmail, one of the leading anti-spam vendors, for $370m in cash. The deal will improve Brightmail’s position, although the prospect of Microsoft entering the anti-spam market is still a significant threat.
